Not by itself. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition, or ADOS-2 is an autism testing tool, gives a trained clinician a standardized way to observe social communication, interaction, play, and restricted or repetitive behaviors associated with autism.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>An ADOS-2 autism assessment can provide valuable diagnostic information, but its classification is not the same as a clinical diagnosis. The evaluator must interpret the results alongside the individual\u2019s developmental history, caregiver or family input, medical and educational information, current functioning, and other possible explanations for the behaviors observed.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>For families, the distinction can be confusing. The evaluator observes how the individual communicates, initiates and responds socially, uses gestures, engages with materials, adapts to interaction, and demonstrates repetitive or sensory-related behaviors during the session.<\/p><p data-start=\"4160\" data-end=\"4478\">The ADOS-2 publisher describes it as a standardized observation of communication, social interaction, play, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. Its findings are intended to inform diagnosis and clinical planning. <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annarbor.co.uk\/images\/PDF\/ADOS-2_Gatefold.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"4378\" data-end=\"4478\"><strong>ADOS-2<\/strong> <strong>overview from the test publisher.<\/strong><\/a><\/p><h2 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-section-id=\"a8y5jx\" data-start=\"4480\" data-end=\"4528\">Does an ADOS-2 Classification Confirm Autism?<\/h2><p data-start=\"4530\" data-end=\"4597\">No. An ADOS-2 classification does not independently confirm autism.<\/p><p data-start=\"4599\" data-end=\"4848\">For Modules 1 through 4, selected scores are entered into an algorithm. The result may fall within an ADOS-2 classification such as non-spectrum, autism spectrum, or autism. The Toddler Module uses ranges of concern instead of these classifications.<\/p><p data-start=\"4850\" data-end=\"4936\">These are classifications produced by the instrument\u2014not standalone medical diagnoses.<\/p><p data-start=\"4938\" data-end=\"5336\">A clinician must determine whether the person meets the full diagnostic criteria for autism after considering multiple sources of evidence.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence<\/a> <\/strong>explicitly advises professionals not to rely on an autism-specific diagnostic tool alone when diagnosing children and young people.<\/p><p data-start=\"5338\" data-end=\"5577\">The ADOS-2 result is therefore one piece of the diagnostic picture. A person can score above an ADOS-2 cutoff and ultimately receive a different diagnosis.
